The City of Song welcomes Dingle’s Other Voices Festival

There’s only one story in town this weekend - and that’s the arrival of the globally acclaimed Other Voices music festival.
The event will not only see some of the industry’s finest playing within the intimate setting of Derry’s Glassworks on Great James’ Street, but will also host a plethora of fantastic live acts in pubs and venues throughout the city for all to enjoy, says ‘Journal’ reporter JULIEANN CAMPBELL...
International music stars are, at this very moment, arriving in the city to perform exclusively within the city’s historic Glassworks on Great James’ Street as Other Voices begins with style.
The inspired team behind Other Voices thought it fitting to find a venue here with as much spirit and character as its natural home at St. James’ Church in Dingle. They chose The Glassworks, our 170 year old Church in the heart of the city that hasn’t seen much action in the last few decades besides the odd disco and, for a time, Bedlam vintage market.
This weekend will probably be the first time that a television crew has made its way inside Derry’s Glassworks - and it will no doubt prove a majestic setting for one of 2013’s most eagerly-anticipated events.
Stars performing within its walls this weekend are Beth Orton, Damien Dempsey, Savages, Derry’s own Neil Hannon, Bronagh Gallagher and Soak, Jesca Hoop, Little Green Cars, Marina and the Diamonds, Daughter, James Yorkston and sensational Bangor trio, Two Door Cinema Club.
The Other Voices Music Trail will also follow on from Kerry to Derry.
Over 40 bands from Derry and all over Ireland will play across city venues including the streaming venues, with the full line-up right here for your perusal. So, you will only be a stone’s-throw away from the action and the unique events that make up the over-all Other Voices experience.
Live Streaming
With only limited seating available at the Glassworks, organisers have had the vision to stream the event live, courtesy of BT Infinity, to several locations in the city so everyone can have the opportunity to watch as the music unfolds.
From 8pm to 11pm, the following venues will stream Other Voices: The Derby Bar, The Grand Central, Tinneys, The Gweedore Bar, Bound For Boston, Masons, Icon Wine Bar, Sandinos, Bennigans, An Culturlann (tonight only) and the Nerve Centre (tomorrow only). Oh, and the Sunday night action from the Glassworks will also be streamed live to the Big Screen in Waterloo Place!
Not only has Other Voices migrated North to our own fair city for this weekend’s events, they will also take their renowned festival across the water to London’s Barbican in coming months too.
This Other Voices triangle will forge a new chapter in the musical narrative of these islands, bringing together a swathe of musical genres and
generations. Other Voices Dingle, Derry and London will continue to applaud originality and embrace divergence and in doing so, create three very special and authentic celebrations where music remains at the heart of the matter.
The Banter Salon
A ‘Banter Salon’ will also be located at The Cottage in Derry’s Craft Village this Saturday and Sunday, with a host of guests lined up for a wide variety of discussions and conversations this weekend, hosted by Jim Carroll of the Irish Times. Doors open both days at 3.45pm-ish and will kick off at 4pm. Admission is free, but capacity is limited so get there early.
Among the topics under discussion this weekend are: Ludovic Hunter-Tilney, the Financial Times’ pop critic, on Psy, ‘Gangnam Style’ and more; The Guardian’s music editor Caspar Llewelyn Smith on what comes next for the music business in the wake of HMV’s woes; Derry Now: a number of Derry artists and culture practitioners discuss the city’s current cultural and artistic health and attempt to identify what’s next for the city; John Naughton, The Observer’s technology columnist, on technology and identity; and local hero Bronagh Gallagher on her music and her home city.
And there’s more.
Ed Vulliamy from The Observer will discuss America and the fraught war between drug cartels carried out on the Mexico-American border; Mary Fitzgerald, Irish Times’ foreign affairs correspondant, on the post-Arab Spring world, and Derry Tech - a look at Derry’s brave new tech world with Mark Nagurski (director of CultureTECH) and Emer Grant (Void Gallery). There will also be performances over the weekend from Jesca Hoop, Rosie Carney, Ryan Vail and George Ezra.
So, a warm welcome to Other Voices.
