Wireless Mystery Theatre will present a gripping piece of theatre recounting radio messages during the sinking of the Titanic, at the Alley Theatre, Strabane on Friday, September 28 at 8pm.

In the four and a half days between leaving Southampton port and the collision with the iceberg on that fatal night, the Titanic’s radio operators received and sent 250 passenger telegrams.

Sometime between 2.15 a.m. and 2.25 a.m. on April 15, 1912, the final wireless message sent from the R.M.S. Titanic to R.M.S. Carpathia, read: “SOS SOS CQD CQD Titanic. We are sinking fast. Passengers are being put into boats. Titanic.”

Across the dark vastness of the Atlantic the radio traffic between the doomed Titanic and her neighbouring ships provide the only surviving record of the desperation of her plight.

Here was a disaster which had no “Black Box” recorder. Now, a century after this cataclysmic event, hear again the voices from the radio room.

The original transcripts from Titanics radio log, alive piano quartet, and hand generated sound effects will transport the audience back to a still cold night 100 years ago, to the death of a ship and the birth of a legend.

Emma Devine Marketing Officer said: “When you read the messages in black and white on a printed sheet, you are amazed at how professional the radio operators are, yet there are definite signs of panic.

“Hearing the messages read out as the operators must have done before sending does send a shiver down the spine, I have never seen anything quite like it”.

Tickets are £3 and available from the Alley Theatre Box Office on 028 71 384444 or online www.alley-theatre.com
