Best known for creating the adorable cartoon character Miss Rosie Red, local artist Trisha Deery has an innovative idea that will involve scores of local children using their imagination.

Still thrilled at the news that she’ll receive Culture Company funding, Trisha, from the Culmore Road, told the ‘Journal’ about her plans.

“I intend to create a collection of short stories written by a range of children from local youth clubs and primary schools. The aim is to include kids from a variety of cultures and ethnic backgrounds and then to take these stories to various illustrators in Derry and beyond so every story in the collection will have its own unique illustrations.”

A grand idea indeed - and Trisha intends to get started in the New Year. “I think we’ll work with five youth clubs and five primary schools and then take two stories from each. There will be 20 stories in all, so we’ll run workshops in January and February with the children and pick out the stories we need. I’m delighted, and I really think it has the potential to be a brilliant book.”

The completed collection will be published using the expertise of local children’s publishers, Dog Ears.
