Dungiven will be buzzing with the best of Irish music and talent this summer when it hosts the Ulster Fleadh, attracting leading musicians, singers, and dancers from Ireland and Scotland, not to mention music fans writes Sheena Jackson.

Fleadh Uladh takes place from 22-29 July, and is packed with competitions and events.

Chairperson Carol O’Kane, who has taken over from the well-known and hugely respected Mena Boyle, who sadly passed away earlier this year, says the Fleadh is a “huge event” for the town.

“All the preparations are in place and we’re really looking forward to it,” she told the ‘Journal’ after Friday’s launch. “We’re hoping it will be as much of a success as last year’s.”

A quick run through of the schedule on the Fleadh’s website reveals a variety of events including dozens of dancing and music competitions, sessions and storytelling, all happening at local venues.

The Fleadh will also have a 10K fun run/walk this year on July 25 in memory of Mena. It will also host another night of music through a concert - Live at St. Canice’s - on July 26.

Ms O’Kane says this year Dungiven has themed the Fleadh around its popular local legend, ‘Finvola, Gem of the Roe’ and on the Saturday evening will have a town centre pageant with floats, portraying the marriage of Finvola.

“It really is a huge event for the town. We just hope we get the weather,” she said.
