Waiting for Video...

The launch of the City of Culture 2013 programme continued at Guildhall Square with the unveiling of a special gift to the city, the Shrigley Piece.

The artwork, reminscent in some ways of Free Derry Corner, was a gift to the city from the London 2012 Festival.

Shona McCarthy of the Culture Company told those gathered that: “this is Derry’s moment in the sun.”

“Mayor of Derry Councillor Kevin Campbell said: “It was a very proud day for the city.”

The black and white mural is emblazoned with the slogan “News: small city becomes huge.”

A number of Strathfoyle primary school pupils then participated in an impromtu photo opportunity and dance performance, all under the watchful eye of Ailbe Beirne, artistic manager with Echo Echo, Dance Theatre company and the other Cutural Partners.

Their attention and that of the rest of the city now shifts to Ebrington Square where the day’s events continue with the launch of the programme.
