‘Walls 400!’ next month

Derry's historic Walls.

Derry's historic Walls.

A unique two-day event “unpacking” the history of Derry’s famous Walls will take place in the city next month.

‘Walls 400!’ - a history conference with a difference organised by the Holywell Trust - takes place at the Verbal Arts Centre on April 6 and 7.

An impressive line-up of experts will speak at the event which is being hailed as “the essential conference for anyone wanting to know about the history of Derry’s Walls.”

Among those participating in ‘Walls 400!’ are historians Dr Brian Lacey, Professor James Stevens Curl, Dr Annaleigh Margey, Dr Billy Kelly and Dr Marie-Clare Peters, DOE archaeologist Paul Logue, Manus Deery, of the DOE, and Mark Lusby, Project Co-ordinator with the City Walls Heritage Project.

As well as lectures, the weekend event will also feature a series of workshops looking at reconstructing the “missing bits” of Derry’s Walls, tours exploring the foundation of the Fountain and Bogside communities and demonstrations of some of the weapons used on the Walls.

Only 100 tickets (£10 or £5 concessionary) are available for the event and must be purchased in advance from The Playhouse Box Office. Tel: (028) 71 268027.

The conference - organised by Holywell Trust as part of the Walls 400! programme of events - is sponsored by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Culture Company, Derry City Council and DOE NIEA. Proceeds from the tickets will be used to fund heritage projects associated with the history of the City Walls.

Walls 400! is a programme of activities planned to mark the quatercentenary of the City Walls during 2013. The objective of Walls 400! is to fully explore the contested history that the City Walls represent and to celebrate Derry’s Walls as a present-day, national heritage asset, with the potential to unite rather than separate people.
