Waterside concert will be among highlights of NAFCo programme
Ace fiddler and composer Chris Stout from the Shetlands and harpist Catriona McKay are headed for the Waterside Theatre as part of NAFCo later this month.
An remarkable array of international fiddle talent is lined up for the Waterside Theatre on Glendermott Road on Saturday, June 30 in what will be one of the big concerts of the North Atlantic Fiddle Convention, NAFCo 2012.
Branded as a ‘Fiddles of the World’ concert, the musical guests include some of the best of world fiddle players.
Scottish duo of Chris Stout from Shetland on fiddle and Catriona MacKay, the Lady GaGa of the harp world, have toured the world with their exceptionally original approach to the music of Shetland.
From Ontario in Scotland comes Pierre Schryer and his trio. Pierre is one of the true virtuosos of Canadian fiddle music and his playing lightning fast playing is truly jaw dropping.
Sharing the bill are old time traditional American players Cleek Schrey and Sthanie Coleman and they will play alongside a County Antrim man well-known from his television appearances, Willie Drennan, who’ll explore the Ulster Scots influence on the development of fiddle music in the United States.

Also from America comes Dan Trueman, one of the visiting experts who’ll be attending the academic convention in Magee.
Dan is no mean fiddle player and he will play alongside Dublin-born Caoimhin O Raghallaigh who has an international reputation as a member of The Gloaming. Caoimhin is one of the gurus of the Irish fiddle fraternity.
From Galicia in the north of Spain comes Alfonso Franco and Alfonso Merino with their distinctive sound.
NAFCo is generating international interest and the programme devised by Dr. Liz Doherty of the University of Ulster has been described as “the Olympics of the Fiddle World”.
It represents a remarkable coming together of fiddle players from different international backgrounds and cultures coming to the north west to share and celebrate their respective traditions.
The Waterside concert really does represent a fantastic cross section of just some of the international talent who’ll visit the city as part of the NAFCo week, which runs from Tuesday June 27th to the closing concert with the Chieftains in Buncrana on Sunday July 1st.
