Young Fab Labbers have helped UK City of Culture 2013 to announce plans for this year’s Creativity Month, the annual celebration of creativity and the creative industries.

Creativity Month in March will include a packed series of events and workshops to stimulate new thinking and collaborations to tackle economic and social challenges.

One initiative will see the Nerve Centre going mobile with its Fab Lab project, taking state-of-the-art fabrication technology into primary and secondary schools.

The Fab Lab is a fully kitted out digital workshop which gives users the capability to turn almost any practical idea into reality.

Other highlights include ImagineNation at W5; a Future Classrooms conference; a showcase of innovation within the creative industries; a diverse range of events, workshops and public talks across the libraries network; and various initiatives promoting science, technology, engineering and maths and the role of art and design.

The full programme is available at www.creativityni.org, the online hub for creativity across the region, which has been developed by Culture NI and City of Culture 2013.

Shona McCarthy, Culture Company chief executive, said: “City of Culture 2013 is a catalyst for the entire region, demonstrating the power of arts and culture to inspire new thinking, drive regeneration and showcase our strengths and creativity to the world.

“March is the month where City of Culture really gets going, with lots of exciting, inspiring events which tie in perfectly with Creativity Month.’

Creativity Month is backed by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, which is the government lead on the creative industries in the north of Ireland.

David Lewis of the Nerve Centre said: ‘Creativity connects things not previously connected – it connects people, ideas and organisations and inspires us to think differently and to look to the possibilities of the future’.

‘Our society faces many challenges in the economy, education, health and the environment.

“Creativity Month will showcase the work of organisations across the region in developing creative and innovative solutions to these challenges.

“This year’s theme will include a particular focus on tackling poverty and social exclusion.’
