Your chance to win a golden ticket for 2013

Derry people have been given the opportunity to win a Golden Ticket giving them access to all the world class events in 2013.

The ticket is up for grabs in a new online competition to identify the Cultural Icon for the City of Culture.

The lucky winner may choose from a hall of fame which includes acclaimed playwright Brian Friel, Nobel Laureate John Hume, world renowned singer Josef Locke, sporting legends Ken Goodall or Charlie Nash and St Colmcille. Alternatively, a case can be made for anyone else who fits the bill.

This fantastic prize will include free entry for two people to a host of the top attractions lined up for 2013, including Hofesh Shechter’s dance and rock spectacular Political Mother: Derry~Londonderry Uncut, RTE’s acclaimed Other Voices, the opening Sons and Daughters concert at The Venue, Teenage Kicks The Musical, the Jazz and Big Band Festival and many more.

Culture Company 2013 Chief Executive Shona McCarthy said: “A Golden Ticket for next year is an incredible prize for anyone to win. There are so many amazing events happening, the winner will be completely spoilt for choice.

“Without a doubt, this will be the hottest ticket in town.”

Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone – both locally and across the world – to get involved in the City of Culture celebrations by helping to choose Derry’s cultural icon. In doing so, people will be in with a chance of winning a golden ticket, which guarantees entry to every single event in the 2013 programme.

“While one lucky winner will have free entry to all events, it is important to emphasise that many aspects of the programme are completely free of charge. This year-long celebration of culture has been designed to be as open and accessible as possible. In particular, I am determined to ensure that those from disadvantaged or excluded communities take ownership of City of Culture.

To enter simply go to the City of Culture Facebook page and vote for one of the suggested Cultural Icons listed there or nominate someone your own choosing. The first round of voting closes on Sunday 16 December with the top five icons going forward to second round with voting recommencing on Monday 17 December.

The final closing date for voting is Monday 7 January and the lucky winner of the Golden Ticket will be announced on Wednesday 9 January.

To get voting go to www.facebook.com/cityofculture2013.
