Georgia’s a lucky duck in hotel culture contest
More than 2,000 schoolchildren from Derry have gone quackers in the Everglades Hotel’s competition to design a Culture Duck for 2013.
The winning entry by Limavady Grammar School pupil Georgia Archibald (12) was selected from the mass of entries to be developed as the hotel’s latest in a long line of toy ducks.
In a close run competition the judges also awarded ‘Highly Commended’ status to Ava Gardiner (9) from Lisnagelvin Primary School and Tyler Gorman (4) from Holy Family Primary School Nursery Unit in Ballymagroarty.
The winning entries were unveiled at an afternoon tea in the Prehen hotel. Georgia’s winning design will now go into production and each guest at the hotel during 2013 will be given one of the new ducks as a memento.
Georgia, whose overall winning entry incorporates the City of Culture logo, said: “I wanted my design to capture the lovely bright colours of the City of Culture logo. I knew that the official Culture Duck would be given to all the hotel guests at the Everglades Hotel next year, so I wanted to make sure it was a duck to remember.
“I am so excited to have won and can’t wait to see my duck when it has been made.”
Stephen Redden, general manager of The Everglades Hotel said he was overwhelmed by the amount of entries. “We are absolutely delighted at how the Design a Culture Duck competition captured the imaginations of the school children of Derry~Londonderry. We received over 2,000 entries which shows the massive interest the competition attracted. There was a wonderful selection of designs and the standard was very high, so it was a very hard decision for the judges to come to.” However, he said it was a unanimous decision to pick Georgia’s as the winning entry. “We felt her design really incorporated the City of Culture 2013. The duck has now gone into production and all guests staying in The Everglades Hotel will receive one of Georgia’s ducks next year.” Andrew Potter, Business Engagement Manager of Culture Company 2013, said it was a fantastic way for the hotel to get local schoolchildren involved in the City of Culture celebrations.
