December 1983 - Mayor backs union campaign against privatisation plans

The Mayor of Derry, councillor Len Green, has voiced his support for the campaign being undertaken by the recently established Derry Trade Union Committee for the Defence of Public Services, against the proposed privatisation of public services.

Councillor Green said it was important that local people should be educated about the effects privatisation would have on public services. He pointed out that when public services were first established their number one priority was to give a service to the public, and the making of profit was a number two priority. The Mayor stated the private organisations had these priorities reversed and were most concerned with making profit. A long time activist in the Post Office Engineering Union, Colr. Green said he would give his full support to the campaign.
