February 1981 - Confusion and disappointment on factory report

There was both confusion and disappointment in Derry concerning conflicting reports that the area could be in line for a factory to manufacture light aircraft.

In government circles there seemed to be some scepticism about the immediate prospect of the reported 200 to 2,000 jobs materialising as a result of the American manufacturer setting up in N. Ireland.

And the Mayor of Derry, Councillor Mrs Marlene Jefferson, expressed disappointment at the latest news that the factory was not immediately on the cards. She said she hoped the whole position would be clarified.

The news broke that an announcement was imminent on negotiations between the government, the Department of Commerce and Gulfstream America.
