The ninth annual St Joseph’s, Galliagh Festival got off to its usual colourful start at the weekend but there was one big difference from previous years - the weather stayed dry!
Galliagh was one of the first parishes in Derry to organise a festival and, although the weather in the past has been far from kind, it has always been well supported and attracts a lot of visitors.
St Mary’s Youth Accordion Band, Buncrana, has played at all the openings to date but this was the first year they finished as dry as they started.
Mayor John McNickle congratulated everyone involved in helping to organise the festival which continues throughout the week.
“If the turnout today is anything to go by,” he said, “the carnival has been an outstanding success.”
