The Bishop of Derry, Most Rev Dr Edward Daly, has said that he is satisfied that beatings of prisoners have taken place in the H-Blocks of the Maze prison.

Dr Daly said that he was referring to incidents that happened last year, and that he was investigating allegations made recently. Dr Daly said that the authorities had asked him for a written submission, but that was hard to do as it was difficult to get details.

But it is known that one prison officer was suspended in connection with a severe beating that a young prisoner got.

Bishop Daly, with Cardinal O Fiaich, had two meetings with Secretary of State, Mr Humphrey Atkins, about conditions in the Maze, and it is known that the two churchmen expressed their concern about some of the things they had learned about.

The Bishop said that he was urging that the beating of prisoners should stop.
