January 1985 - Separate Council for Waterside is not on, unionists told

Derry City Council is being properly conducted and there is no possibility of any change in its boundaries, the creation of a separate Waterside Council, or the appointment of a Commission to take over the Council.

That was the message spelled out unequivocally by Stormont Minister Chis Patten, replying to representations from Official Euro MP John Taylor who was seeking the removal of the Council, its replacement by a Commission, or a separate Unionist-controlled Council for the Waterside.

The SDLP, reacting to the Minister’s answer to Mr Taylor, urged the unionist to come to terms “with the irreversible fact that their political control of Derry has gone forever.” In SDLP circles there was undisguised satisfaction that the Minister had squashed the suggestions.
