Speaking to students at Queen’s University, the Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Rt Rev Dr Robert Eames, said that none of the churches in Ireland could opt out of a degree of responsibility for the divisions which had fostered so much of the current trouble and suffering in the North.
His Lordship said: “Mr Ciaran McKeown, leader of the Peace Movement, speaking in Derry, criticised the leadership of the Churches for a lack of moral courage. He particularly referred to the record of Church leaders in relation to violence.
“This criticism is but one of the many comments which have been made on the role of the Churches in Northern Ireland. But it is one which we who call ourselves Christians will ignore at our peril.”
