March 1977 -Row over booking of entertainers at parochial halls

The Derry branch of the N. Ireland Musicians’ Association said that they were boycotting all parochial halls in the Derry diocese, because, they alleged the various hall committees were employing what they called “scab labour”.

A spokesman for the Derry branch said: “Our members are professionals and earn their living from their profession. By employing semi-professional performers and complete amateurs the committees are depriving our members of their bread and butter.

“We met the committees last September and asked them to review their booking policy but they have done nothing.

“The Irish Federation of Musicians in Dublin has backed our action.....,” the Derry branch said.
