President Michael D. Higgins is to visit Derry’s Rosemount PS as part of the school’s centenary celebrations.

Rosemount PS Principal, Brendan Grant confirmed that the Presidential visit is only one of many events planned to mark the significant milestone in the school’s history.

“We don’t have a confirmed date yet but we are excited at the prospect of the visit,” he told the ‘Derry Journal’ this week.

A gala concert at the Millennium Forum will see pupils and current staff joined by past pupils and former members of the school choir in order to raise funds for the school. The school have issued an appeal to all former members of the choir to participate. Two choirs will be formed to perform at the concert on May 15, one female and one male ensemble. Rosemount PS was an all male school until 1974.

Pat MacCafferty, chairman of Féis Dhoíre Cholmcílle and former Rosemount pupil said: “The school has a long and distinguished musical tradition stretching back generations. Former headmaster Charlie Doherty was a genius musically, Freddie Campbell was a wonderful teacher of Gregorian music and has an unparalleled record at the Feis. Music and choral singing is a massive part of the school’s legacy, Rosemount has a long history of musical excellence. Many past pupils will have fond memories of their time in the choir and representing the school at the Feis, so we are asking them to get involved in the past pupils’ choir. They will be helping raise money for the school and will also be able to renew old acquaintances. It will be a choir full of nostalgia. We already have twenty five members signed up but there are a lot more Rosemount singers out there and we’d love to hear from them.”

Former past pupils of the school include John Hume, Eamonn McCann, Gerry Anderson and Garbhan Downey.

Raymond Kelly has been signed up as mucial director with Giles Doherty assisting him. Martina Ramsey will lead the female choir. Anyone interested in joining the male choir should attend the first rehearsal at the Helen Street school on Wednesday February 8 at 7.30pm. Any former female pupils interested in joining the choir should contact the school on 71 265605 to register their interest.
