September 1984 - Restrictions on building stifling west bank - council

Derry City Council’s Planning Committee has adopted an unusual form of protest to highlight once again its opposition to areas of special control - areas where building is prohibited or severely restricted.

The Council has been opposed to special areas because they restrict housing development on the west bank. But the Planning Committee feel the Department of Environment have been ignoring their opposition.

So Councillor Len Green proposed, as a further protest, an application to build a two-storey house at Racecourse Road, which had been refused permission, should remain on the committee’s schedule indefinitely.

Councillor Pat Devine said the Department of the Environment should be informed about the protest.
