September 1984 - Rossville Flats must be demolished, says Mayor Tierney

Derry’s Mayor, Councillor John Tierney, has renewed his call for the demolition of the Rossville Flats. With the Housing Executive survey of the flats expected to begin, Councillor Tierney said it was a matter “of no little importance” that the tenants understood what was being asked of them and that their answers be clear and unequivocal. This survey would probably be, he claimed the major factor in deciding the future of the flats.

The Mayor said the flats should be demolished because it had reached the stage where no one wanted to live in them. Thirty-five flats were vacant and vacancies would only increase in the years ahead.

“Who wants to live in flats where the British Army and the RUC come in frequently?” he said.
