Gymnastics in Derry is in line for a major boost in November with a visit to the city from Team GB’s Olympic bronze medallist Beth Tweddle.

The three times world champion will drop into the Twisters and Shooting Starz clubs during her visit to the city on November 2.

Beth is considered to be the most successful British gymnast of all time and the members of Shooting Starz and Twisters are huge fans of the artistic gymnastics star.

Both clubs cater for more than 400 members each, delivering programmes and coach education to suit all.

With members competing on the Northern Ireland squad, the clubs also support the up-and-coming artistic young talent that Derry has to offer.

Twisters Gymnastics Club contacted Beth Tweddle back in June and asked her to come and officially open their newly opened facilities.

Unfortunately, due to the training demands of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the sports star was unable to make the trip and wished Twisters luck with their new gym.

However, with the support of British Gymnastics, Beth Tweddle has now agreed to drop in and officially open their new premises.

Derry’s Mayor has also agreed to welcome Beth to the city and be a part of what should be a fantastic community celebration.

Terri Fisher and Ann Hebor, head coaches of the Derry clubs, say they’re honoured that Beth has chosen to begin her Olympic victory tour in Derry.

Smaller clubs, such as Shantallow Community Centre, Saint Mary’s Youth Club and Galaxy Gymnatics Club, will attend the November 2 event.

After signing autographs and delivering workshops to the Derry gymnasts, Beth Tweddle will follow them to Jordanstown to watch them perform at a national gymnastics for all festival called GymFusion.
