ACL Division 1B
Malin 1-12 St Michaels 2-06
Malin returned to winning ways in the League with a three point victory over St Michaels on Saturday evening in Malin. A very entertaining game saw the home side return to something near full strength after a torrid time with injuries over the last couple of months, Malin captain Paddy Kelly returned to his midfield berth and he was totally dominant there for most of the game as Malin raced into a 1-05 to 0-01 lead in the first quarter. The goal came from the penalty spot after 7 minutes with Malin 2 points to 1 ahead, Anthony Kelly taking on and beating a number of St Michaels defenders before being fouled as he bore down on goal, Michael Byrne making no mistake with the resulting penalty. Malin appeared to be cruising midway through the half and may have taken the foot off the pedal a little but they received a dose of reality by the 20 minute mark, Christy Toye hitting his sides second point before Martin McElhinney got in behind the Malin defence to
fire home and reduce the deficit to three points. The same player was unlucky not to level proceedings shortly after with an effort which went narrowly wide but Malin re-settled for the remainder of the half and added three scores to extend the lead out to six points at the break, 1-08 to 1-02.
Raymond McLaughlin opened the second half scoring for St Michaels with a free after two minutes but Malin took control once more adding three points in as many minutes, the best of these a fine point from Matthew Byrne to extend the lead out to 8 points. Malin were coasting at this stage and were very annoyed to see the St Michaels umpire signal a score for Steven Coyle when his shot was clearly wide and were even more annoyed when referee Keiran McShea awarded the score, a poor decision on what was not his best day at the office. This seemed to lift the visitors who had appeared out of the game in the third quarter, Coyle hitting a second point with 16 minutes of the half gone before his side were awarded a penalty two minutes later when Martin McElhinney was fouled as he was about to shoot for goal. Steven Coyle stepped up to take but his shot was superbly saved by Declan Lafferty in the Malin goal who then proceeded to pull off an even better save
from the same player on the rebound, the ball this time safely cleared. Toye and Michael Byrne traded scores as the game neared its end before Brian McLaughlin hit a consolation goal for the visitors with the last kick of the game.

The reserves had a very comfortable win against St Michaels with the McLaughlin(Fildara) boys doing most of the scoring. The reserves led by 1-07 to 1-02 at the break, the goal coming from Simon Ward and they really went to town in the second half, Niall and Paul McLaughlin adding goals while Niall could easily have had another two but for the Dunfanaghy keeper. Scorers for Malin reserves; Paul McLaughlin1-06, Niall McLaughlin 1-03, Gerard McLaughlin 0-03, Simon Ward 1-0, Steven McLaughlin 0-01.
The reserve side meet Glenfin in the quarter-final of the Senior Reserve Championship this Sunday in Convoy at 2-00pm, all support welcome.
