Derry & Strabane Council has agreed to look at introducing a ‘Blue Plaque’ programme for the area following a request from the Ulster Historical Society.

The Society volunteers erect blue plaques for men and women who have made a contribution to history.

There are 194 plaques in the north and border area.

The bill for each plaque is £1,000 and will have to be paid for by the Council, its Business & Culture Committee was told this week.

Candidates for future consideration locally have been identified as Mabel Remington, Capt. William Coppin and Francis Ledwidge.

Sinn Fein Councillor Patricia Logue asked whether councillors or officers could put someone forward and was told they could.
