Work currently ongoing at the city’s municipal graveyard at Lone Moor Road is expected to be completed by the end of this year .
The first phase of the final development works at the cemetery commenced in November of last year .
The works consist of the provision of site infrastructure for a new burial area at the lower end of the City Cemetery along its boundary with the Lone Moor Road.
The plans incorporate a new internal access road and footpath layout, car parking facilities, an additional 1,000 new burial plots and public toilets.
Accessibility for persons with restricted mobility to new burial plots will also be included as part of the site works.
In addition, there will be a complete refurbishment of the formal garden adjacent to the Chapel of Rest for the benefit of cemetery visitors and local people.
There will also be significant soft landscaping of the new burial areas, including the planting of several hundred new trees.
