The Foyle Cup soccer competition has received a £10,000 funding boost from Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín.
The news was welcomed by Foyle Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin who said it was further evidence of the minister’s commitment to Derry.
“There was a shortfall in funding this year and I worked directly with the organisers and the minister and thankfully the miniser has managed to secure £10,000 funding, proving again that she is a friend of this city,” she said.
Ms McLaughlin also called for a long term strategy to be put in place to secure the future of the competition. “The DETI minister has said she intends to fund nine major events under the Priorities for Action plan and I have asked her to consider the Foyle Cup.
“It generates 10,000 bed places in the city and perhaps we should also be looking at establishing a civic investment type fund which would involve the private sector as well.
“This is a fantastic event and generates so much positivity across the city and we need to work to ensure its long term sustainability,” Ms McLaughlin said.
