Derry dentist and Everest mountaineer Hannah Shields was the first in the line today at the opening of the new Foyle Arena.

The new leisure centre will be a Centre of Excellence for wall climbing, judo and wrestling with a 2,000 person capacity events space. It also has a huge 25 metre competition swimming pool, children’s pool and fitness suite.

The build has cost a whopping £12m and taken 18 months to construct.

Mayor Colr. Elisha McCallion, said it was an historic day for the City and District putting the area on the map in terms of a sports and events facility of regional scale and significance.

She said “The Foyle Arena is a hugely impressive centre and a fantastic resource for the people of the city and region. The official opening to the public today is a hugely exciting occasion for everyone involved and we are extremely proud to offer these world class facilities to the public. The project was made possible thanks to major funding from Derry City Council and the Department for Social Development.

“This has ensured that the Foyle Arena will also be a permanent venue for cultural, entertainment and commercial events.”
