35th anniversary of George McBrearty

A commemoration marking the 35th anniversary of IRA Volunteer George McBrearty will take place in the city tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, May 28.

Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the Creggan republican monument at Cromore Gardens at 1pm.

The event has been organised by the McBrearty family. Guest speakers at the event will include Martin Galvin and Hugh Brady.

The event will take place 35 years to the day when George McBrearty (24) and Charles ‘Pop’ Maguire (21) were shot dead by an undercover soldier from the SAS during the hunger strike of 1981.

Both men were fatally wounded at the Southway entrance to Creggan.
