A local councillor has said more than 80 incidents of dog fouling were found on an 100 metre stretch of pathway in the Glenowen area of the city.

Colr. Kelly said he saw the extent of the problem himself while talking to residents of the area.

“I was in the area working on another issue for a constituent when I was approached by a local resident who was alarmed at the problem of dog fouling in the area, the health dangers it presented and the image it was creating for responsible pet owners.

“We walked along a 100 metre stretch of walkway that runs from Creggan over to Glenowen and within a very short space of time I was shocked that we counted 80 incidents of dog fouling along the pathway,” he said.

Colr. Kelly said dog fouling can create serious health problems and called on pet owners to act responsibly.

He also suggested that dog waste bins, which have already been installed in other areas of the city, could be introduced in the Glenowen area.

“The mess caused by dog fouling is dirty, smelly and unpleasant, and creates a significant health hazard, especially to children, and brings irresponsible dog owners into conflict with other users of public places.

“Dog faeces can contain campylobacter, salmonella and other pathogenic organisms which contaminate wounds or broken skin.

“The most serious health risks are toxocarisis and hydatid.

“We do not want to see dogs or their owners penalised but measures need to be taken to help promote responsible dog ownership by raising awareness of the nuisance and health risks created by dog fouling. I will be in contact with the dog warden and Environmental Services to see what immediate measures can be taken.

People are working night and day to improve the greens spaces in area for local people and he last thing we need is people showing total disregard for all that.
