Eight hundred new voters have been added to Derry’s electoral register in three months.
The Electoral Office has announced the boost to the voting register, which took place between December 1 and March 1.
SDLP Waterside Councillor Martin Reilly welcomed the announcement while calling for anyone not registered to do so as soon as possible to allow them to vote in the Assembly, local council and alternative vote referendum polls on May 5. “I am delighted to see an increase of people registering to vote in recent weeks,” he said.
“With two elections and a referendum on the horizon people are taking steps to ensure their right to vote but there are probably many more who need to do the same.” He added: “The electoral regulations require people to provide proof of residency for new applications, so people who wish to get onto the electoral register should allow plenty of time to do so and not leave it to the last day - which is 14 April 2011.”
