97% of pupils have Internet

A new survey commissioned by ILEX has revealed that 97% of post-primary pupils in the city now have access to the Internet on a regular basis for their homework.

The urban regeneration company for Derry has released the results of a survey, to determine the access young people have to digital media.

This is the second survey to be conducted by Ilex, researching access to broadband for 11–18 year olds across the Derry City Council area.

The survey shows that while much of the physical infrastructure is in place, in homes and schools, more use could be made of the opportunities that Internet access provides to change the way we learn both in and out of school.

Michael Gallagher, Ilex’s Strategy & Regeneration Manager said: “Distance or e-learning is growing at a rapid pace across the world but particularly in less developed regions. If the city is to remain competitive, then we must embrace new technology and digital content by both using and producing it. We need to ensure that our young people have the skills and ambition required by schools, employers and digital entrepreneurs”.

Gerard McCleave, Director of Strategy & Regeneration at Ilex added: “These results are very encouraging, indicating that 97% of post-primary pupils have access to the Internet, which has grown from 90% in 2009. The survey has also revealed that young people are extremely digitally literate, with 96% using the Internet for social media purposes. These results demonstrate the underlying strength of young people in our city”.

The survey also revealed that while girls use social media more than boys they also spend more time on homework using the Internet.

It also found that individuals in more deprived households are less likely to be able to access the Internet and the majority of pupils would like to complete their homework on-line.
