Altnagelvin Amigos take on Movember

A group of moustached medical amigos from Derry's Altnagelvin Hospital have raised almost £1,000 for charity after taking on the Movember Challenge.

The 12 staff members who make up to Altnagelvin Amigos hail from the Orthopaedic Ward at the hospital.

Team Captain Andrew Walls said they decided to take on the challenge to help raise funding and awareness of prostate cancer and other men’s health issues.

Andrew said the response has been amazing, and the facial hair growth impressive.

“We have been getting quite a few funny looks but people have been very supportive. We have had a lot of donations, including from patients and a nurse here donated £100,” he said.

The Movember Foundation is tackling men’s health on a global scale.

The foundation aims to address some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.

“We know what works for men, and how to find and fund the most innovative research to have both a global and local impact,” a spokesman said.

“We’re independent of government funding, so we can challenge the status quo and invest quicker in what works.

“In 13 years we’ve funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects around the world.

“By 2030 we’ll reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.”
