Altnagelvin A&E delays ‘unacceptable’ - Fleming

Around one in four people attending Altnagelvin Hospital’s A&E department are having to wait more than four hours for treatment, the latest figures reveal.
New figures released by the Department of Health show that between October and December of last year a total of 3267 patients had to wait more than four hours in A&E - that’s around 30 every day.
The north’s Department of Health target states patients should be treated, admitted or discharged within a strict four hour time frame.
Over the three month period, thirteen people had to wait longer than 12 hours at the hospital to be treated and admitted or discharged.
Local Sinn Fein health spokesman councillor Paul Fleming says the latest figures are “unacceptable.”
“Sinn Féin had warned that cutbacks to frontline services would lead to a severe deterioration in the level of service that could be offered and we are now seeing this borne out by these figures. It puts severe pressure on frontline staff, who do a remarkable job in extremely challenging circumstances,” he says.
The Derry hospital failed to meet the Department of Health target in every month of last year.
