Anti-war protestors in Derry are set to stage a demonstration against the visit of a controversial retired US general next month.
Retired General Stanley McChrystal, who led the US forces in Afghanistan, has been invited to the city to speak at the local Chamber of Commerce’s president’s lunch.
Davy McCauley from the Derry Anti-War Coalition said: “This man was involved in the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan which have caused untold misery and loss of life.
“This is a city which has suffered so much from military imperialism, particularly on Bloody Sunday. In Afghanistan where this general led forces, the Afghan people have experienced Bloody Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. We do not believe this is the type of person who should be invited to speak in our city and we will be staging a protest to show our opposition.”
