It has been confirmed that what has been described as ‘a viable explosive device’ has been found outside a house in Inishowen
The drama began when Gardai were called to the house yesterday afternoon at Carnmore in Gleneely .
Gardai were called after the owner became suspicious after noticing the device earlier in the day.
In a statement released yesterday evening the Gardai Press office in Dublin confirmed that colleagues in Buncrana had been called to investigate the suspicious device.
The statement confirmed however that an explosion had been carried out.
“Defence forces EOD carried out a controlled explosion at approximately 3p.m
It is understood it was a viable device capable of causing injury and/or damage
An Army spokesperson stated: “All items of an evidential nature have now been handed over to the Gardai to assist them in their investigation of the incident.”
There was considerable interest local ly when Gardai arrived and placed a white Garda tape across the road outside the house. The army then arrived by helicopter.
A farmyard next to the house was also been sealed off.
An eye-witness said there were up to six Gardai at the scene.
“We don’t really know what has happened.
“One neighbour has said that something has been left at the back of the house.
“We don’t know what it is but the Gardai have been called and the area is being examined,” he said.
