A Ballykelly man with over 220 previous convictions has been been jailed for 22 months.

Patrick James Peter Morgan, of Churchill Road in the village, pleaded guilty to common assault, taking a car without permission, driving whilst disqualified, no insurance and driving with excess alcohol.

The charges relate to an incident on October 26, last year.

Derry Crown Court heard the 40-year-old and his then partner had been out drinking. When they left the bar Morgan took the keys to the car and insisted that he drove.

While they were in the car Morgan accused the woman of going out with someone else and he then slapped her about the face.

She got out of the car and went to a friend’s house.

Morgan arrived at the house a short time later and punched the injured party about the head a number of times before kicking her.

The woman managed to get out of the house, however the 40-year-old pursued her, punched her and dragged her back to the house.

The court was told Morgan continued to punch and kick the woman until he calmed down and left.

He was arrested later the same day and a breath test gave a reading of 111mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

During police interview the 40-year-old said he was too intoxicated and couldn’t really remember what he had done the previous day.

The court heard the woman went to hospital and sustained bruising to he face, a swollen arm and pains to her chest and back as a result of the attack.

It was revealed to the court Morgan has 227 previous convictions and had been disqualified from driving for three years in January 2012.

Defence counsel Conor Maguire said his client is ‘very remorseful and sorry for what he has done to the injured party’.

He added the 40-year-old doesn’t ‘seek to excuse his actions’.

Imposing a determinate sentence of 22 months, Judge Phillip Babington ordered Morgan to spend half this sentence in custody and half on licence.

The judge also banned him from driving for ten years.
