A man who stole beer from a Waterside off-licence and then assaulted police who came to arrest him has been ordered to complete a community service order.

Thomas Grimes, of Barnewall Place, pleaded guilty to theft, assaulting and resisting police on March 11.

Derry Magistrates Court heard the 25-year-old and two other men went into the off-licence on Clooney Terrace and stole two cases of beer.

Grimes was identified by staff and when police arrested him he pushed one officer in the chest and raised a fist at him.

He also attempted to kick police, threatened to bite an officer and lashed out.

A defence solicitor told the court ‘alcohol was undoubtedly a factor’ in the incident and the 25-year-old wished to apologise for his behaviour. He added the 25-year-old is willing to pay for the beer he stole.

District Judge Peter King ordered Grimes to complete 150 hours community service and pay £20 compensation.
