Jailed for hitting woman on the head with her crutch

A mother of twins who assaulted a woman with her crutch has been jailed for four months.

Amanda Sarah Louise Deehan, of Primrose Street, pleaded guilty to common assault and assaulting two police officers on February 25.

Derry Magistrates Court heard police were called to an address by a man who wanted the 29-year-old and two other women removed from his home.

They were drunk and were arguing among themselves and ‘hurling insults’ when the police arrived. Deehan, who was wearing a cast on her leg, refused to leave the house and she hit one of the other women on the head with her crutch.

The 29-year-old was on bail conditions at the time and was banned from consuming alcohol. She was arrested for breach of bail and assault.

Deehan punched a police officer on the face and later kicked another officer.

During interview, the 29-year-old denied the assaults on both the police and the injured party.

Maeliosa Barr, defence solicitor, said his client is a mother of twins who has issues with alcohol and prescription drugs.

He said Deehan has indicated she wants help to address her problems and has attended drugs and alcohol courses since she was remanded in custody.

Mr Barr told the court Deehan’s twins will be one in June and she wants out of prison as soon as possible to have a life with them.

District Judge Barney McElholm jailed Deehan for four months and imposed an offender levy of £25.
