A 32-year-old man who stole a bra and underwear from a circus changing room has been ordered spend a year on probation.

Seamus James Gerald Bonner, of Ivy Terrace, pleaded guilty to burglary on April 11.

He was also ordered to complete 50 hours on community service.

Derry Magistrates Court heard Bonner was going out for a bike ride when he entered the mobile changing room in Ebrington Square.

The changing room was a trailer owned by Circus Vegas who were performing in the city at the time.

It was situated in a staff only area and was used by female performers.

Bonner was seen emerging from the trailer with a strapless bra and a pair of running leggings and police were called.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman told the court the 32-year-old is embarrassed and ashamed of his behaviour.

He said Bonner ‘took advantage’ of the situation he found himself in and stole the items in the ‘heat of the moment’.

District Judge Peter King said a caution on Bonner’s record from 2006 caused him ‘concern’.

However, the details of this were not aired in court.

Imposing the community service and probation orders, the judge said if there was any similar offending in future ‘jail will be a very real possibility’.
