As many as 2,000 properties in and around Dungiven and Feeny will experience a loss of water supply from the early hours of Sunday.
While no homes are currently without water, the ‘Journal’ understands customers in the Curragh Road, Brishey, Banagher, Feeny, Park and Gortnaghey areas will be affected from Sunday.
NI Water said they anticipate “as many as 2,000 properties served by Caugh Hill Water Treatment Works will suffer a disruption to their water supply from the early hours of Sunday morning. This is due to the ongoing industrial action.
“Areas that may be affected include – the Curragh Rd, Brishey and Banagher areas of Dungiven, Feeney, Park, and Gortnaghey. Customers are advised to visit niwater.com and use our postcode search to check if they are affected.
“We appeal to customers to refrain from using water unnecessarily to conserve remaining water supplies (e.g. not washing cars; hosing yards, etc).
“Should any of our customers be out of supply for more than 24 hours, we will endeavour to provide alternative water supplies, details of which will become available on our website.”
Sinn Fein Councillor Sean McGlinchey urged people in the area to look out for their neighbours, especially those who are elderly and those living alone in more remote areas.
“Residents should fill containers of water tonight if possible to be prepared and if you could do the same for elderly or vulnerable neighbours. If you require assistance please contact Cathal Ó hOisín or myself.”
A spokesperson for NI Water added: “NI Water has mobilised all resources at its disposal to deal with this latest incident, however, due to the limited resources available to us, as a result of industrial action, our response has been restricted.
“NI Water contacted Trade Unions today, Saturday, to seek their assistance to reinstate the protocol to allow their members to deal with emergency situations. Unions stated they were not in a position to reinstate any protocol.
NI Water fully recognises this is a frustrating experience for our customers, and can assure them we are doing everything possible to restore water supplies as quickly as possible.
“Customers can visit niwater.com for further advice and updates or call our contact centre on 08457 440088.”
