Police in Derry say a device discovered during a security alert in the Shantallow area of the city was ‘capable of killing.’
Up to 30 homes were evacuated in Ballyarnett on Monday night but residents have now been allowed to return while a police investigation continues.
Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan paid tribute to the residents of Ballyarnett village for their “understanding and patience”.
“We can confirm it was viable and we believe it was capable of causing great harm and even of killing,” he said.
Ch. Insp. Callaghan said police were not yet able to provide any more information on the size or type of device found.
“At this time we are not in a position to elaborate on the nature of the device.
“I am thankful to the residents of Ballyarnett Village for their understanding and patience throughout the alert and I ask them to continue to support us as we carry out our investigation in the area this morning.” he said.
