Councillor Martin McDermott says there are “major issues” around the county in relation to rubbish at beauty spots.
He added that while there were concerns over a lack of bins at some locations, the bins themselves could be the problem in others.
He said: “Bins are a controversial thing and it’s hard to get the balance right. Bins can be filled in a day and then birds are eating at the bags. Rubbish gets strewn around. But then, when you don’t have bins, what do people do with their rubbish? The Council empty the bins once a week and I do think this is a major issue for them. But at this time of year they need emptied more often. This is something we’re going to have to take a serious look at.”
Councillor McDermott said he was also concerned that new legislation relating to bin charges will exacerbate the problem He said: “Anyone who has a camper van/caravan or holiday home now can’t use bin labels. Where are they supposed to put their rubbish? We need to put a plan in place.”
Councillor McDermott said that a plan also needed to be put in place for Malin Head as phase two of works at the location begins. Meanwhile, in response to a query from the ‘Journal’ over concerns regarding barbeques being left behind partially buried at local beaches, Donegal County Council asked members of the public to consider others when they are using local beaches. They reminded members of the public: If you are enjoying a picnic on the beach, please bring your rubbish home and leave nothing behind; if you are enjoying the beach with your family and friends, please ensure no waste is left behind by any member of your party; when using facilities at your local beach please ensure they are treated with respect and left clean and tidy. A spokesperson added: “It is completely unacceptable to leave rubbish behind as it is a threat to others using the beach, to the environment and to the local tourism industry. Every effort is made by Donegal County Council and local communities to ensure that we retain our Blue Flag Status. There are 13 Blue Flag beaches in Donegal.
