Hopefully it will be a case of ‘bringing the weather’ with him as Derry musician, Eoin O’Callaghan, better known as Best Boy Grip, has just been signed to provide the music to UTV’s Weather bulletins.

The quality of the Derry man’s live shows have already saw him secure gigs at Tennant’s Vital and this week he is supporting Bronagh Gallagher on her UK tour. This marks the first time he has been commissioned to do something on a national platform.

In a strange quirk of fate Eoin holds an avid interest in meteorological events, or as he suggests: “I’m a bit of a weather freak.”

A video of Eoin standing toe-to-toe with the remnants of Hurricane Katia on the hills of Malin Head has already gone viral on youtube, therby proving his point. ‘Ex Hurricane Katia at Malin Head’ has been watched almost 40, 000 tims and it shows Eoin trying to stand against the might of the 80mph winds in Sept 2011. “I’m really interested in extremes of weather,” he said.

Eoin’s track ‘Roller Bootin’’ was broadcast on the UTV weather bulletin five times daily from November 26. In doing so Best Boy Grip becomes the first Derryman to score the prime time slot. Previously the bulletin featured the talents of among others, Kieran Goss and Brian Kennedy.

“It was great to be asked. In fact the production company really liked the Best Boy Grip material but it was hard to get something that was just right.”

Luckily Eoin had recorded the track some years previously. “I didn’t think it was right for Best Boy but it was for this. I just have to find a way to work it into the live set now,” he smiled.
