Encóre Contemporary Choir will be undertaking its biggest venture to date when it performs its new show ‘Decades’ at the Millennium Forum on 8th September.
The seed which became Encóre Contemporary Choir was sown in 2010.
The idea was to have a modern, fresh-thinking, contemporary choir that broke from the norm, re-wrote the rules of choral singing and captured the vibrancy and energy of the new Derry!
Encóre was launched into the world in February 2011 with a stated aim to “…create a professional singing ensemble, but with a focus on the social aspect too, i.e. ‘havin’ a bitta craic’”! It would challenge the preconceived and stereotypical notions people had about choirs being stuffy and rigid by making this choir more accessible, more relevant and ultimately more enjoyable for both members and audiences. It would be something the City of Culture needed, but didn’t yet have!
Membership was open to anyone over the age of 21 and there was no audition.
Musical director, Emmet Doherty commented:“Not having to audition was important to attract people who wouldn’t usually take part in an ensemble like this. If you liked to sing and were prepared to attend rehearsals and work hard, you were in!”
In the last 2½ years, under Emmet’s leadership, Encóre has gone from strength to strength, consistently drawing huge audiences wherever they perform and garnering rave reviews along the way. They have sung for the Dalai Lama, to welcome ‘The World’ cruise liner to Derry, at Stendhal, at Culture Night, at Music City, and at a sell-out concert in the Waterside Theatre, to mention just a few. They have also been a surprise present from the bride to the groom, or vice versa, at a number of weddings, singing songs such as “I Gotta Feelin”, “Happy Together” and “Lean on Me”!
“Our Millennium Forum show – ‘Decades’ - on 8th September is Encóre’s biggest venture to date,” said Emmet.
“We will be taking a journey through the decades from the 1950s to modern day, from Glenn Miller to Adele, from Abba to Coldplay and Fun, with stops on they way for The Beatles and Madonna – and many others!
“The audience will not only be entertained by exciting and energetic contemporary choir pieces but by an array of soloists and duos drawn from within the membership – and we have a few surprises planned! ”
The choir has supported Foyle Search and Rescue and Children in Crossfire in the past, and part of the proceeds from the Millennium show will be going to Action on Hearing Loss (formerly RNID).
Action on Hearing Loss, which is the choir’s Charity of the Year, was adopted because of how much choir members, who obviously love to sing and listen to music, value their hearing.
