A Bogside resident thought he “was seeing things” when he noticed anti-Islamic, anti-Europe and anti-refugee graffiti in the area at the weekend.
The man, who did not want to be named, was walking close to Elmwood Road on Sunday morning when he saw the slogans and messages which read: ‘F**k Angela Merkel’; ‘Irish for Irish values’; ‘Oppose Europe’s immigration policy’, ‘Ireland will not be taken again’ and ‘Oppose Islam’,
“I thought I was seeing things and had to look twice at this graffiti, you sort of get immune to it because this area has been blighted by it over the years,” said the man.
“But I was genuinely surprised to see this nonsense plastered over a couple of gable walls. I hope it is removed as quickly as possible,” he added.
Local Sinn Fein councillor for the area, Colly Kelly, said he was disgusted at the graffiti.
“Residents in the Bogside I have spoken to are scratching their heads in disbelief and are outraged after seeing this graffiti. This is definitely not the views of the vast majority of people who live in this community.
“We all have been shocked on seeing the refugee crisis across Europe. And this city has gone the extra mile in trying to get help to those affected by the crisis,” added Colr. Kelly.
