A black British woman living in Ireland who had been chosen to Tweet from @Ireland for a week has been subjected to tirades of racist abuse.

Michelle Marie, originally from Oxford and now living in Co. Mayo, was asked to curate the @Ireland Twitter account for a week but within minutes of posting her first Tweet she was forced to endure racist abuse.

Michelle describes herself as a blogger, vlogger and a plus size model.

Trolls posted a range of vile and racist Tweets but other Twitter users were quick to jump to Michelle’s defence.

“Solidarity with you, and keep tweeting. You have a right to represent Ireland as much as anyone else,” said one woman.

“The irony of those racist trolls, more Irish people live in UK than anywhere else in the world. Ignore them,” added another.

Michelle was forced to stay away from Twitter for a brief time because of the abuse but she found her voice again on Tuesday morning.

“Go raibh mile maith agat to all the kind-hearted, lovely people out there xx,” she Tweeted.

The @Ireland Twitter handle is curated by a different person each week and it first started in 2012.

The account, which originates from IrishCentral.com seeks to celebrate the diverse voices linked with Ireland around the world.
