Border campaigners' invite ahead of protests

The invite to Border Communities Against Brexit was confirmed at the full council meeting held in the Guildhall on Thursday, and comes just prior to a day of action along the border.

Protests are to take place this Saturday,October 8th, at 3pm at Bridgend on the Derry-Donegal border and at Lifford Bridge at the Strabane-Lifford border, as well as right along the border across the north.

Border Communities Against Brexit is a group of people from all sectors – business, community, farming - as well as individuals who have come together out of concern that the north’s remain vote will not be respected.

The group have stated that it is “really worried about the devastating impact that Brexit will have in this region and we want to make sure our voices are heard when decisions are being taken in Dublin, London and Brussels.”

The group has written to all local councillors requesting that they can speak to the council.

Speaking at the Council meeting, Sinn Fein Councillor Paul Fleming said there were “very real concerns” among people living in border areas and he added his party would be in favour of bringing forward a motion in conjunction with others.

Derry & Strabane Council Chief Executive, Mr. John Kelpie, said the group was being written to inviting it to attend the Council’s Governance & Strategic Planning Committee meeting at the beginning of November.
