Army bomb disposal experts have declared a suspected pipe bomb in Buncrana to be a hoax.
The all-clear has been given at Tullyarvan Mill - which was sealed off by Gardai since the discovery of the device this morning.
The area was declared safe shortly before 5pm after army bomb disposal experts flew in on a helicopter from Athlone and examined the object.
An item resembling a pipe bomb was found on a wall beside the main entrance, next to a parked car, at 9.40am.
It was discovered by a parent of a student receiving Leaving Certificate exam results at Coláiste Chineál Eoghain Irish language secondary school which is located in the building. The complex is also home to a 51-bed hostel and a number of community groups and social enterprises.
Tullyarvan Mill manager Michael Diver said he was alerted to the presence of the suspicious object and immediately called the Gardai. “I may think it’s a prank or a hoax but I know nothing of this sort of thing and I’m not going to take any risks. The health and safety of everyone in the building is paramount,” he told the ‘Journal’.
