Buncrana community notes

As part of the nationwide Bealtaine celebrations, the Donegal Library service is delighted to host two local history talks in the Buncrana Community Library on Wednesday, 14th May at 6.30 p.m.

Local history enthusiast Shaun Canny will discuss “The history of politics in Inishowen” with particular emphasis on 1870-Partition era. Admission is free.

As part of the Buncrana Leisure Centre’s 25th Anniversary, a ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ will be held in the Plaza on Saturday, 17th May. Tickets are 10 euro.

The next meeting of the Swilly Gardening Club will take place on Monday 19th May at 8 p.m. in the Anglers’ Centre, beside the Castle Bridge. New members welcome to come along. Contact 074 9361606 for further details.

St. Mura’s National School is holding a Coffee/Tea Afternon and Cake/Home Produce sale this afternoon from 2 -5 p.m. All proceeds will be shared between the school and the Donegal Hospice. Copies of the school’s new “Favourite Recipes” will also be available on the day.

A symposium on the ‘Laurentic’ will be held in the Inishowen Gateway Hotel today and on Monday, 12th May there will be a concert of music by Poulenc, McGlynn, Whitacre, et.al. With conductor, Shaun Ryan and soloists, Gali Evans, piano, Shonagh Lyons, soprant and Julia Beebe, Violin.

The Buncrana Youth Drop-In has a Homework/Study Club on Fridays from 4 – 5.30 p.m. and all secondary school students are welcome. There will be free math grinds available to anyone who needs them. Come along to the Buncrana Youth Drop-In, supervised by Youth Workers.

Men’s Group Walking for Health - all men in Inishowen are invited to start walking for improved health and enjoyment. Telephone Margaret at IDP 086 8375592 for further information.

The Annual General Meeting of the Buncrana Chamber of Commerce will take place on Wednesday May 14th at 7.30 p.m. sharp at the Inishowen Gateway. All welcome.

i.C.A.R.E. will hold its Annual General Meetng on Wednesday, 28th at 7.30 p.m. in the i.C.A.R.E. Centre, Ballymacarry. Applications will be open for the position of treasurer and secretary on the committee. Application forms can be obtained by calling Karen, 086 1081200.

St Brigid’s N.S. Glenmakee Carndonagh in conjunction with Saddle Rock Cycling is running cycle on Sunday 11th May leaving G & S Supermarket. Registration €10 from 9.30/10 a.m. sharp.There are three routes 4,17 & 30 mile Carn-Gleneely-Culdaff-Malin. The Illies Community Development Committee is holding a sponsored 5k walk/run/cycle this Sunday, 11th May leaving at 1 p.m. from the new sports hall at Druminderry. Light refreshments and a bouncy castle will be there on the day and the AstroTurf will be in use.
