100 come off the dole - but Derry still north’s highest unemployment rate

Almost 100 people came off the dole in Derry in the last month of 2012 - but the city still has the north’s highest rate of unemployment.

New Stormont figures released this morning show that 8.4% of people of working age in the city are currently claiming unemployment related benefits - more than double the rate in North Down, Castlereagh and Newtownabbey.

A total of 6032 people in Derry were claiming unemployment related benefits in December 2012, according to the statistics.

The rate of unemployment in Strabane currently stands at 7.6%, while in Limavady 7.2% of people of working age are claiming benefits.

Across the north more than 63,000 are currently claiming unemployment related benefits
