£5million investment in Vital Venue at Ebrington

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has announced details of a £4.6million investment towards a temporary venue to host major events during Derry’s City of Culture 2013 celebrations.

The main venue for hosting the major events during 2013 will be the proposed temporary structure, also known as the Vital Venue.

The Vital Venue will provide a covered facility capable of accommodating audiences in excess of 2,000 people for the major UK City of Culture 2013 events. The pavilion will also be made available for other community-led propositions and for concerts proposed by commercial promoters.

Nelson McCausland said: “I am pleased to announce that my Department will invest a further £4.6million to support Londonderry’s preparations for UK City of Culture 2013. The funding, which is additional to my Department’s £10million capital investment in infrastructure, will provide a temporary covered indoor venue on the Ebrington site to host many of the major events planned for 2013.”

The Minister added: “On 30 May this year, the Culture Company announced details of some of the events planned for 2013. The temporary venue, which will stage in the region of 45 events and can accommodate over 2,000 people seated, is a crucial resource for the 2013 programme. There are no alternative indoor venues in the city centre that can cater for events of this size and the Vital Venue will provide the centrepiece for delivery of the events programme as an essential additional space that will host both large scale local community-driven events and events of an international standard.”

The structure will be erected on the Ebrington site to the rear of the Clock Tower building.

It will remain in situ throughout 2013 and will be demounted at the beginning of 2014.
